Series SK - Zero Backlash Torque Limiters & Safety Couplings

R+W ball and detent torque limiters and safety couplings are available in coupling or pulley mount designs and feature zero backlash, high rigidity, a disengagement detection ring and multiple connection options.

  • Adjustable Settings: A wide torque range is available on each model, which can be field adjusted for the optimal setting.
  • Disengagement Detection: An actuation ring can be sensed, with a separate proximity switch, for automated machine shut off.
  • Low Residual Torque: Only 2.5% residual torque, after disengagement, reduces torque limiter wear.
  • Non-Standard Applications: Modifications, custom designs, and different materials, including stainless steel, are available upon request.

Model SK1 - Torque Limiter Safety Coupling with Conical Clamp or Clamping Hub
(14 sizes with rated torque from 0.1-2800 Nm)

Design Description: A hub design for mounting pulleys, sprockets, or gears. Shaft connection is by standard conical clamping hub or single screw split clamping hub, depending on size.

Bore Diameters: Metric or inch bores from 4-100 mm, or 0.1875-3.875 inches. Keyways are not available on these models.

Temperature Range: From as low as -30° C to as high as +120° C in standard version (3.6° F to 270° F). High temperature options available.

Sizes: SK1-1.5, SK1-2, SK1-4.5, SK1-10, SK1-15, SK1-30, SK1-60, SK1-150, SK1-200, SK1-300, SK1-500, SK1-800, SK1-1500, SK1-2500

Model SKP - Torque Limiter Safety Coupling with a Pure Key Connection
(14 sizes with rated torque from 0.1-2800 Nm)

Design Description: A hub design for mounting pulleys, sprockets, or gears. Shaft connection is by hollow bore with keyway.

Bore Diameters: Metric or inch bores from 4-100 mm, or 0.1875-3.875 inches. Keyway sizes must be specified.

Temperature Range: From as low as -30° C to as high as +120° C in standard version (3.6° F to 270° F). High temperature options available.

Design Description: A shaft coupling design providing angular, axial, and parallel misalignment compensation, with a single screw split hub shaft connection design.

Bore Diameters: Metric or inch bores from 3-80 mm, or 0.125-3.125 inches. Optional keyway reduces maximum bore capacity.

Temperature Range: From as low as -30° C to as high as +120° C in standard version (3.6° F to 270° F). High temperature options available.

Design Description: A shaft coupling design providing angular, axial, and parallel misalignment compensation. With a conical clamping hub shaft connection.

Bore Diameters: Metric or inch bores from 10-100 mm, or 0.5-3.875 inches. Keyways are not available.

Temperature Range: From as low as -30° C to as high as +120° C in standard version (3.6° F to 270° F). High temperature options available.

Application Example:

Model SK5 - Torque Limiter Safety Coupling with Clamping Hub Press-Fit Connection
(12 sizes with rated torque from 0.1-850 Nm)

Design Description: A unique two piece coupling design for "blind" applications where access to tightening screws is difficult or impossible. Provides zero backlash transmission along with angular, axial, and parallel shaft misalignment compensation.

Bore Diameters: Metric or inch bores from 3-62 mm, or 0.125-2.375 inches. Keyways are available, but will significantly reduce bore capacity.

Temperature Range: From as low as -30° C to as high as +120° C in standard version (3.6° F to 270° F). High temperature options available.

Sizes: SK5-1.5, SK5-2, SK5-4.5, SK5-10, SK5-15, SK5-30, SK5-60, SK5-80, SK5-150, SK5-300, SK5-500, SK5-800

Design Description: A more economical jaw coupling design, with elastomer insert for vibration damping. Shaft connection via single screw split hubs. Provides zero backlash along with angular, axial, and parallel misalignment compensation.

Bore Diameters: Metric or inch bores from 6-75 mm, or 0.25-2.875 inches. Keyways are available, but will reduce bore capacity.

Temperature Range: See insert specification chart below.

Sizes: ES2-10, ES2-20, ES2-60, ES2-150, ES2-300, ES2-450, ES2-800

Application Example:

Model ESL - Economy Class Elastomer Insert Jaw Torque Limiter Safety Coupling with Clamping Hub Press-Fit Connection
(5 sizes with rated torque from 9-200 Nm)

Design Description: Economy torque limiter is pre-set to a single release value. Ball bearing design eliminates ratcheting wear. Elastomer insert jaw coupling provides zero backlash along with angular, axial, and parallel misalignment compensation.

Bore Diameters: Metric or inch bores from 6-32 mm, or 0.25-1.25 inches. Keyways with set screws are standard.

Temperature Range: See insert specification chart below.

Sizes: ESL-5, ESL-10, ESL-20, ESL-60, ESL-150

Coupling Insert Options, Temperature Ranges, and Stiffness Ratings:

The elastomer inserts are made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), in a variety of shore values. To provide different stiffness and vibration damping characteristics, optional Hytrel® material can be offered for higher temperature applications.

The inserts are pre-stressed during assembly which provides zero backlash, more consistant load sharing, and improved restoring forces for precise positioning and repeatability.

* Due to the electrically conductive properties of the insert, electrostatically charging of the coupling is prevented. This eliminates sparks during normal operation in explosive areas. Technical data is available upon request.

The values of the relative damping were determined at 10 Hz and 20˚C.


Compensates for Misalignment:

The elastomer insert jaw coupling can compensate for axial, lateral (parallel), and angular misalignment. This aids in assembly and reduces load stress on drive bearings. It is important to consider the maximum values highlighted in the catalog to avoid premature wear of the elastomer element.
